Shimizuya Ketchup, the legendary ketchup born in Yokohama
Shimizuya Ketchup is said to be the first tomato ketchup made in Japan. According to the Yokohama City History Draft, Tsutsumi Harukichi of Koyasu Village, Yokohama, began cultivating Western vegetables around 1866. Eventually, Koyasu Village's Western vegetable fields spread to the Tsurumi area, and one of the farmers, Shimizu Yosuke, not only cultivated Western vegetables but also began processing tomatoes. He is said to have learned how to make it from Hosogai Otohachi, a chef at a Yokohama foreign sports club. (From Yokohama Social Dictionary, published in 1917) This is said to be the first tomato ketchup made in Japan.
